Big Brothers Big Sisters Makes a Difference

The oldest, largest and most effective youth mentoring organization in the United States, Big Brothers Big Sisters has been the leader in one-to-one youth service for more than a century. Providing mentoring to children ages 6 through 18 in communities across the country – including yours – Big Brothers Big Sisters is developing positive relationships that have a direct and lasting impact on the lives of young people.

The Big Brothers Big Sisters model is based on one-to-one relationships supported by options for organized group activities. In an effort to meet more needs, there is also the opportunity for school-based mentoring in which the child’s school is used as a regular meeting place for him and his Big Brother to spend time together.

Mentoring Works

Research has shown that positive relationships between youth and their mentors have a direct impact on children’s lives. The Little Brothers who participate in youth mentoring programs are:

• More confident in their schoolwork
• Able to get along better with their families
• 46% less likely to begin using illegal drugs
• 27% less likely to begin using alcohol
• 52% less likely to skip school
